Insta Monday

Happy Monday friends!!!

I had a very LONG weekend, but it was full of fun, good times and friends. I attended my good friend Bre's bridal shower/bachelorette party and had a great time. I mentioned HERE that her theme was Sex and the City and I was debating on what to wear. I finally decided on a completely different outfit than I'd planned. Isn't that how it always goes?? LOL! I decided to go for an orange, tribal dress and nude pumps. It was SO Miranda. And guess what??? I won best dressed!!! How fun :-) I will show the full outfit this week but here is a sneak peak of what's to come, as well as some fun pics from that night.

This is what I wore for the shower; we wore all black to the party :-)

Naturally FabEllis: My 1st Guest Blogger

I hope you all have had a wonderful day!! I am super excited to announce that this post features Natural Hair/Beauty Blogger, Ashley. She and I met a few months ago and quickly became blogger buddies. We clicked instantly and I am so happy and honored that she agreed to be my first Guest Blogger on Nic's Picks. My goal is to feature a different guest blogger/topic each month this summer. If YOU are interested, let me know and we can make it happen :-)

I felt this post was a great idea because when I was natural for 2 1/2 years, I only knew braids and kinky twists as styles to go to. However, so many women are either natural or thinking about becoming natural that I wanted to give them other styles to think about, while reminding them the importance of hair care. So who would I turn to?? ;-) Ashley, of course! She has the best tips and the best advice for all you natural hair beauties out there. I know a lot of my followers are natural and I want to continue to connect with you ALL. With that said, enjoy this post and be sure to check out Ashley's blog, FabEllis and her Facebook page, HERE

My decision to go natural was a scary decision at the time, but I knew that it was a must in order for me to have healthy hair.  A year later, I can truly say I made an awesome decision.  My first year being natural was a huge learning curve, but through trial and error and wonderful resources like YouTube, I was able to find a regimen that works for me.  Ever since my journey has begun, it has been a goal of mine to share any tips I have learned for healthy hair.

With that being said, here are my top three tips for healthy, natural hair:

  1. Moisturize
If there is one thing I have learned, it is definitely that natural hair needs moisture.  Natural hair can easily become dry, especially in the summer time, so it is important to keep it moisturized.  Many get caught up in the various regimens that are out there, but the key to keeping hair moisturized is to begin by using a sulfate-free shampoo.  Sulfates strip hair of moisture that natural hair needs.  One of my favorite shampoos is Shea Moisture’s Moisture Retention shampoo.

After shampooing, I condition my hair, rinse and then use a deep conditioner for 20-30 minutes.  After rinsing the deep conditioner, I put a leave in conditioner on my hair and style with a cream based product like Beautiful Textures’ Moisture Butter.  By using a heavy cream on my hair, my hair is able to stay moisturized for up to a week without reapplying.  I apply light oils like tea tree or olive oil to my scalp if needed.

  1. Avoid Heat
I think this is one of the hardest things for naturals to do.  We are so accustomed to using heat on our hair, but trust me… If you lay off the heat, your hair WILL grow.  It’s important for you to remember this.  Heat alters your hair.  Every time you add heat to your hair, no matter how much heat protectant you use, you have the potential to damage your hair.  Now the next question typically is, “Well, if I can’t use heat on my hair, what am I supposed to?”  This leads me to my last tip.

  1. Protective Styles
Protective styles are awesome when it comes to natural hair.  Plus, they allow you to achieve, twists and curls without adding heat.  From two strand twists to bantu knots to braids, I love protective styles.  Some of my favorite styles are two strand twists and braids.  Please just keep in mind that if you do use extensions with a protective style that the style should not be too tight and after you take them out, give your hair at least two weeks to recover.  I have learned the hard way that going from extension style to extension style can be very damaging to hair.

With these three tips, you are sure to be on the road to healthy hair!  To stay updated with my natural hair journey and the products that I love, follow me here:

The Beginning of Summer...

Hey there!!! How was your weekend??? Mine was rather busy, but what's new right?? LOL! I spent most of Friday working and preparing for my my little sisters Princess Party that we hosted at the house. She had all of her friends/Princesses over as a celebratory event. They will be going to Orlando, FL to compete the week of July 4th and needless to say, they are super excited!!!

Saturday, the fiance' and I spent the Day in Delaware shopping---market, thrifting, and the mall. I must say my babe know me very well because I found some amazing items at this outdoor/indoor flea market called, Spence's Bizzare. I always love to find unique treasures and vintage pieces at flea markets and thrift shops. When I got to the mall, I was more on a mission to find certain items (i.e. maxi dress, skinny jeans, running shoes, and a LBD). I was successful, and then some!!! LOL I found what is easily the most comfortable dress I own, which has to be my favorite purchase. I actually wore it today during my Ladies Brunch. It's SUPER colorful and the fit is perfect! (pics below)

Today, my girls and I met at Rusty Scupper in downtown Baltimore. I planned the gathering because it's been awhile since I've been around all of my girls at once. I promised myself that before the wedding, I would plan events here and there just so we can all hang out continue to build on our great relationships. I have such a diverse and interesting group of friends and when we all get together, its thee best time! I am truly blessed and thankful :-)

Enjoy the pics and I hope you all have a GREAT Monday! Make sure you check back tomorrow for a special guest feature!! If you have natural hair or are thinking of going natural, you will LOVE what's coming!!!

Be blessed!

Facebook Friday: The Weekender Edition

Good morning friends, and HAPPY FRIDAY!!! Can you believe that its June already??? The days are just flying by, but I am definitely thankful and blessed to enter into another month.

I will keep this FBF post short and sweet today. The two looks I recreated are both looks that are PERFECT for the weekend. I really love bell bottoms and really flare jeans so the first look is right up my alley. The second look is from one of my dearest friends, Ayana. She is such a genius when it comes to designing and making clothes. She is a true fashionista and has been ever since I've know her. Oh and in case you're wondering, yes---she made her outfit ;-) I recreated her look using the red, white and blue as an inspiration. I am a huge fan of sneakers and hats so the look has my name written all over it ;-)

Which is YOUR favorite look?? Enjoy and ttys!!!...be blessed :-)

P.S You can follow Ayana on instagram (audacious_ladya) see her other designs, HERE or HERE.

InstaGREAT!!

Morning darlings!! I hope you all had a great Monday---happy Tuesday!!

As you all know, I am on Instagram (msnicjames) and I love making picture collages. The first is one from this weekend. I planned a surprise b-day party for my fiance' and he had a great time! Not only was he surprised, but he was so grateful that our friends came out to celebrate him :-) The theme was "Game Night" because Darrius, and all of our friends, LOVE to get together and play Taboo. My mom and I went to Party City and found decorations that reminded us of the casino/Atlantic City. My lil sis blew up some balloons, we got out fav snacks and food from Target....everything was just wonderful! I hate that I didn't take pictures but I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off so, LOL, i didn't eve remember to snap shots of the decor. I did however get to snap a pic of my him with his money hat and dollar chain on. LOL...he's  mess!

This next set of pics are from yesterday. I wore my Love, Cortnie clutch, my thrifted pink pants (also seen HERE), my favorite South Moon Under sandals, and my thrifted ring. I was unable to take full body/outfit shots, but I still wanted to share parts of my look with you all.

Yesterday after work, the babe and I went to see Hunger Games and then to our favorite spot, the Tomato Palace. The movie was GREAT---I now want to read the book. Despite the killing of children, I enjoyed the fashion in the movie, as well as the action/suspense. It is definitely a must see for those who haven't gone yet. As far as dinner, I opted for the Meatballs and Palenta, and some Mango wings. OMG, they were divine!!! The meatballs are served with grits...amazin'! I allowed my fiance' to share them with me, just this once ;-)

All in all, I had a pretty GREAT Monday. This week is going to be an eventful one for me. Tomorrow my mom, sister and I are headed to see Raven Symone in Sister Act, and Thursday, lil sis, the fiance' and I are going to DC to a few museums. Friday, it's all pageant business with mom and sis. We have to find her a few dresses and other items for her upcoming appearances and pageants. WHEW! Busy and eventful to say the least. But, I wouldn't have it any other way ;-) Be blessed , enjoy your day, and talk to you soon. XXOO!!!

~Nic
